Color that goes with plum?

Postby mrs.breedlove » Mon May 06, 2013 6:19 am

We'll be painting the new house soon and are keeping our color scheme for the living room from our old house. Plum / Gray. That being said, now that we have a dining room, I'm needing to find a color that kinda goes with plum. My frist thought was like a teal, but I'm not 100% sold. Both colors need to compliment gray since the main wall connects both the living room and dining room so it will be gray.

Here's the purple we're doing:

I think that Teal would be pretty and bright. I also think that a nice (sage-ish) green could work if you wanted to go in a different direction. We have this color in our front hallway/living room and we love it. (I think it looks better in person than on this computer color swatch).http://www.homedepot.com/p/BEHR-Premium-Plus-8-oz-PMD-37-Caraway-Interior-Exterior-Paint-Sample-PMD-37PP/202177900#.UYe15UpRTBs

We have a gray dining room so I know it works with gray and I think it would go with the purple too.

Teal was my first thought too. You could also consider orange and/or yellow, depending on what you're going for. Sometimes I Google color palettes for ideas.

Or, best of both worlds!

The one in the middle actually looks a lot like my living room :good: (I got home an thought, oh yea-- green!).

I think all 3 look great! FWIW, I always like to keep white and black in any color scheme. I think it makes the colors "cleaner".

I like the first set best too but I'd be too scared to do an aqua wall. I'd probably do the green and some aqua accents. I LOVE the plum color!! Great choice!!

I love the first set! I'm so jealous of you kids and your cool-tone walls. My fireplace dictates warm colors in my house {well, at least on the first floor}, which I don't hate, but I don't really love, either.

I'm in the minority...I like the third set of colors best but that's probably because I shy away from things that are really bold. I like the green in that one a lot.

What if you just did a warm grey? That would keep with the color flow without being too dark and/or bold.

I have to admit, I'm more like Sara when it comes to paint. I tend to go for the lighter shades on the walls and save the bolder pops of color for rugs and accents. Especially if I have dark furniture in the room. :dontknow:

The majority of the main floor walls will be a light gray. I like doing a bold color accent wall, I get too bored if all the walls are the same color. Plus, we just bought dark gray living room furniture and I think it will pop nicely against 2 plum accent walls. :)

I was playing around on Sherwin-William's site (which is awesome, btw) and came up with the below color pallete. The green will of course be a decor accent type of thing, unless I get brave enough to use it in the 1/2 bath, but it's a bit outside my comfort zone lol

The gray color on the trim will be the main color.

I like that picture you just posted, the bright bold colors look good trimmed in a neutral white/black/grey. :good:

Oh, I misunderstood-- I didn't realize you were looking for coordinating paint colors... I take back my orange suggestion ;)

Love that SW paint site! It's perfect for the highly visual person :)
